Jade Monkey

In most arty-musical situations feedback is my friend, but last night it was a cruel beast that marred part of my set at the Jade Monkey. I opened with an untitled bit of real-time peppercorning which worked reasonably well, but the said feedback became too omnipresent and kind blew the structure and feel of the piece. It's a shame because I had it worked out to a tee at home when I was rehearsing - it sounded really good. The second piece was redux of a Jade Monkey favourite, The Sky Is Falling which (realised with Max) turned out quite well, aside from the glitches at the start.

Dan Varricchio and Rafael Torale also played impressive sets.

Thanks to everybody who came along, some more exciting photos are on the way.

Realising "The Sky Falling" with Max/MSP

In preparation for Saturday night's performance, I've decided to revisit an old favourite: "The Sky Falling" (2006).

The Max/MSP realisation of "The Sky Falling" consists of a main patch which triggers samples of the phonemes which make up the poem (i.e. the, sk, y, fal, ling, etc.) When a triggered sample has finished playback it relay triggers the next sample in series after a short delay. The short delay creates a pause between phonemes (fal-ling)and assembled words (falling-into), this allows the semblance of the poem to sound more like a realistic speech pattern. Each of the phoneme samples are stored in sub patcher where the relay trigger time can be set and the sound of the phoneme can be altered with a biquad filter and comb filter.

I did some documentation last night, but I don't have time to upload it today. Check back here in a couple of days.

'Sky Falling' redux via Max

In preparation for a show in a month or so, I've decided to revisit a previous work and attempt to refine its technical process via Max/MSP. So far, so good...albeit a bit clicky.

Performance at Jade Monkey 9.8.07

Last Thursday night I opened for Pretty Boy Crossover's album launch at the Jade Monkey. It was my first 'electronic' gig in awhile and beforehand I appeared to be more nervous than someone should naturally be when all they have do is sit themselves behind a laptop. I performed two pieces - the first The Sky Is Falling is a revised 'vocal' work I had previously performed, and a new work Conversation Piece which is essentially a tasteful mash-up of previous smaller works interspersed with new sonic treatments. I think it worked to some effect with the audience who were also treated to the excellent retro synth pop of Belittle League and a lovely chilled performance by Pretty Boy (Crossover) Mr. Sweeney.

Cheers to Seb Tomczak for taking some photos and video footage.
