Another mention for Tyndall Assembly 07

The Tyndall Assembly concert series was mentioned in the 2007 arts wrap-up in the Dec 21st edition of the Adelaide Review. Thanks to writer and concert 2 attendee Grahame Strahle.

TLR 'wins' an Oscart

The Tyndall Assembly and myself got a brief mention in today's Advertiser annual Oscarts listings for 2007. Under the heading of 'Best Experimental Music' the entry reads:

Tristram Louth Robbins (sic)
The computer sonic radical and founder of the Tyndall Assembly series ensured sound bites in Adelaide.

I'm not entirely sure what a 'computer sonic radical' is, but I'm happy with the publicity and send kudos to the Advertiser for the mention.

Tyndall Assembly Concert 4: wrap-up and thankyous

The final Tyndall Assembly concert for 2007 wrapped up last night and a good audience. My interstate re-mix collaboration with Jason Sweeney was played over with great performances the PA as the crowd settled into their seats, then Edward Kelly provided some sonic manipulations with a combination of live modular synthesis and resonant objects. After a brief intermission, a spirited performance of Alvin Lucier's I am sitting in a room (1970) brought the evening to fitting close as the piece essentially paid homage to the space which has been home to the Tyndall Assembly over the past four months. Special thanks to audience member Johnno for his memorable reading of I am sitting in a room. Some images are posted below and some more can be found at the Tyndall Assembly website. Unfortunately the audio set-up which was recording the concerts proceedings malfunctioned and regretfully there are no recordings available for posting.

With the series wrapped up for 2007, I would like to warmly extend thanks firstly to the sponsors and facilitators whom made the series viable: The Helpmann Academy and EMU for their funded and in-kind sponsorship and facilitator of the Gallery Delacatessen venue, Luke Altmann. Next the 2007 Tyndall Assembly artists: Sanad, Mychorizza (Jordon Bang, Justin Phelps), Seb Tomczak, Luke Harrald, Derek Pascoe, Hidden Village (Lauren Sutter, Seb Tomczak), Vinny Bhagat, Kym Glyus, Poppi Doser, Darren Curtis, Al Steven, Milkcrate, Edward Kelly, Jason Sweeney and Johnno. Finally, thanks to the audiences and media for their kind patronage and warm reception throughout the series.

This series has been great success for me as a curator and artist as it has provided me with a wonderful opportunity to host an eclectic range of local talent and meet some new faces along the way. Additionally, the excellent attendance and reception of the 2007 series has been bolstered by some great exposure through local and interstate media. The fundamental goal of the Tyndall Assembly has been to provide local artists with an opportunity to present their works at a regular forum, whilst developing and strengthening ties between fellow artists, audiences and the broader arts community in Adelaide. I am pleased to confirm that there will be another series in 2008, and I look forward to hosting the Tyndall Assembly once again in the new year.

Tyndall Assembly Concert 2: wrap-up & images

Last night the second Tyndall Assembly concert of 2007 featured performances by Luke Harrald and Derek Pascoe, Hidden Village and Vinny Bhagat (with Kym Glyus.) At the categorically sold out concert, the audience was treated to Luke's new work fr@gment, Hidden Village's live breadboarding and mobile phone music and Vinny Bhagat's swells of tailored noise with projections by Kym Glyus. Concert 3 is on August 30th with works by Poppi Doser, Darren Curtis, Milkcrate and a 'special' performance of Alvin Lucier's seminal work I Am Sitting In A Room (1970).

Audio will be posted on the Tyndall Assembly blog later today (when I've got a little more time.) :)

Thanks to everybody who came out last night.

[24.4.07] Tyndall Assembly update

Thanks to the Helpmann Academy, the Tyndall Assembly concert series will proceed from June onwards with secured financial backing. This will assist in many ways - particularly in giving collaborating artists a decent performance rate and producing some professional publicity items such as posters/flyers and purchasing a web domain.

Oh, I've designed a new logo as well.

Watch this space, etc.

[4.4.07] Tyndall Assembly 2007 Series

The Tyndall Assembly will be back for another year with a season running from June to September.

In 2006, the Tyndall Assembly was a highly successful concert series held at Luke Altmann's Gallery Delacatessen, which gave local artists the opportunity to perform their works at a regular forum, where audiences were treated to a wide variety of experimental and electronic music. A total of nine concerts were staged between March to August, featuring performances by Hidden Village, Alex Mitchell, Christian Haines, Andrew Georg, Derek Pascoe, Patrick McCartney, The Glitch Collective and myself. Historic works by John Cage, Robert Ashley, Brian Eno and Alvin Lucier were also performed.

There is a call for new works by local Adelaide artists, composers and groups:
Please send a brief synopsis of your work, including a summary and any technical requirements for the performance (including what you can supply and any additional items you may need.)
Please go to http://www.geocities.com/tyndallassembly to read more about the concert series.

** Please note that the site is currently being updated, and will eventually be merged into a blog - allowing participant artists and audiences to contribute feedback and commentary.

Further updates on the 2007 concert series will posted here and on the Geocities site for the time being.

[27.7.06] Tyndall Assembly 8

Last night's Tyndall Assembly concert was by far one of the most satisfying programmes thus far, though on the other hand it was a depressing crowd attendance pulling barely half a dozen patrons. This was a great disapointment for me as the performing artists put such a great deal of time and commitment into their works for this concert. Both performances were sublime, articulate and original - by local composers, artists and performers - I urge you to make it to a concert in the future when you have the chance!

[20.7.06] Tyndall Assembly Concert 7

Tyndall Assembly concert 7 took place last night at the Delacatessen Gallery last night, it was a good casual affair. Two works were performed, my Translations #2 for acoustic guitar and sine waves and an improvised performance based on Brian Eno's Oblique Strategies. My piece (an extentions of an earlier version) used sine waves to resonate the guitar's strings, employing addtional effects such as feedback and treatments. The Oblique Strategies are a set of cards developed by Brian Eno and Peter Schmidt in 1975, designed to help to artist in compositional and performance processes. Each of the cards contains instructions such as 'honor thy error as a hidden intention', 'be dirty' and 'what is missing?'. The improvised performance included all members of the audience who were given two cards each to use. Prior to the performance each audience member selected from a range of objects including Ukulele, harmonica, bottles, bowls, mugs, glasses and sheet metal. The performance was made up of four movements - the first was spontaneous, where the audience could play as they wished, for the second movement the audience would refer to their first card and play as it instructed. The third movement involved the second card, whilst the fourth movement was an attempted recapitulation of the first movement. The main objective of this piece for each audience member to deliberatly and intuitively shift in dynamic, altering their playing technique throughout the performance. It was a lot of fun with some wonderful, if not chaotic results. I'll post more on this performance process at a later date. Unfortunatly there are no photos from the performance as were all too engrossed in our playing and no-one was available to take pictures. But here are some others anyway:

Prior to the concert Adam Page offered a selection of tasty buns.

The next Tyndall Assembly concert is Thursday next week (27-7), starting 8pm featuring new works by Derek Pascoe and Andrew Georg. Hope to see you there.
